The Bird and Butterfly Bāgh

Bringing nature into our homes is what creating beautiful landscapes is all about. We crave for the outdoors, for our very own little piece of paradise in our homes, and once the transition from barren to picturesque is complete, we are ready to enjoy the evolutionary process that is the garden. It is an act of kindness that we bestow upon ourselves, by commissioning a garden.

But many others benefit from this small act of kindness too. Because a garden, is about more than just plants and trees. It is more than just gardening soil and irrigation lines. In creating a garden, we create a micro-ecosystem, the beneficiaries of which are flowers, fruits, birds, bees and butterflies, not to mention the kind client who commissions the garden in the first place.

One such act of kindness was commissioned to our office for a weekend and holiday garden in the locale of Lonavala, for a joint family from Mumbai.

The brief was simple. It was to be something that everybody in the family could enjoy; toddlers, teens, parents, grandparents and friends. But it also wanted to be a haven for birds and butterflies.

Due research into flora-fauna relationships followed, and layout options were made keeping the brief in mind. The result of this beautiful process was a garden, that is now maturing, and getting ready to welcome it’s bird and butterfly friends. Colourful and fragrant border planting curves graciously along the garden, with a central open lawn to run on, a small children’s play area for the kids and a lazy gazebo to bask in the winter sun.The nectar in flowers that bloom, awaits a winged friend.
