The Lock & Leave Instant garden

The idea of having a garden that you could lock up and leave for weeks together while you went gallivanting around the globe is almost dreamlike… Every time we leave for a trip, however short it may be, the nagging question of ‘who will water my garden while I’m gone?’ always lingers in our minds!

We were commissioned with creating such a garden for a family of 3 in Pune recently.  And we show you here that having a lock and leave garden isn’t completely impossible.   If you’re an occasional traveller, you can have the options of having a desert palette of plants, which in themselves are adapted to low water requirements, or having most of your plants in self watering pots, which means you can fill up the water reservoir present inside the pot with adequate water which the plants can keep using while you are away.

Succulents, cacti and some varieties of grasses are known as xerophytes.  They’ll either survive drought intact, or die down and come back to life when it rains.  You can in fact create a miniature xeriscape in your balcony with just a basket of succulents, and pat yourself on your back for being an ecologically sensitive, responsible gardener.

Flooring works so as to add colour to the garden, as well as to metaphorically symbolise the coolness of water, soothing to eyes, as well as lowering room temperatures for the spaces below.

And last but not the least, if you are looking at a small area, like this terrace we designed, artificial lawn is the best option considering the look and feeling of lush green that we all love, the soft lawn-like texture as we take a walk on it, and the fact that we do not have to water it copiously, nor weed it.

We had a short time frame of just 2 weeks to get this garden looking like it does now, from getting the flooring done, to selecting the pots and plants, and as we devised our very own method to convert ordinary pots to self-watering ones, the project gave us lot of hands-on experiences!

So the next time you think twice about whether to get a garden done, and how much time it will take, think again! Getting a garden done is ALWAYS, ALWAYS a great idea! Once you decide that you want to get it done, we can always come up with a million options so as to make it work for you. So keep calm, and garden on!
